International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP) 2026

IYRP 2026 The United Nations General Assembly designated 2026 as the International Year of Rangelands & Pastoralists (IYRP). This was the result of efforts by a voluntary group now called the Global Alliance for Rangelands & Pastoralists (GA4RP), which worked for over 10 years towards attaining this designation. It is now implementing the year in collaboration with the Food & Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations.

Aims of the Initiative

  • Awareness: Greater awareness in science & society about how rangelands & pastoralists contribute to food security, economy, environment & cultural heritage.
  • International Support: Resolutions taken by UN and other international entities in support of rangelands & pastoralists.
  • Policy Reform: Changes in national, regional & global policies in favour of sustainable management of rangeland resources by pastoralists & other stakeholders.
  • Ethical Investment: Increased sustainable & ethical investment in rangelands & pastoralist livelihoods.
