Can agroecological farming feed the world? Farmers' and academia's views
September 14 - 16, 2022,
The annual interdisciplinary conference on research in tropical and subtropical agriculture, natural resource management and rural development (TROPENTAG) is jointly organised by the universities of Berlin, Bonn, Göttingen, Hohenheim, Kassel-Witzenhausen, ZALF e.V. (all Germany), Ghent University (Belgium), Czech University of Life Sciences Prague (Czech Republic), BOKU Vienna (Austria), and the Council for Tropical and Subtropical Research (ATSAF e.V) in co-operation with the GIZ Fund International Agricultural Research (FIA).
Tropentag 2022 will be organised as a hybrid conference by Czech University of Life Sciences, Czech Republic. This means that, we will have an in-person conference but that all oral presentation sessions will streamed live via our conference app. These presentations can be joined by interested participants. Further, poster presentation sessions will be organised in form of in-person sessions - these will not be streamed but posters will be made available on our website. A few poster presentation sessions wil be organised on-line showing pre-recorded poster presentations followed by a discussion between the presenters and participants. Anyway, the organisers will ensure that TT22 attendees will have the possibility to interact with the presenters, chair-persons and participants.
All MSc and PhD students, scientists, extension workers, decision makers and politicians interested and engaged in agricultural research and rural development in transition and developing countries are cordially invited to participate and actively contribute. We particularly encourage young scientists (MSc and PhD students and Post Docs) to present their work.
The Tropentag is a development-oriented and interdisciplinary conference. It addresses issues of resource management, environment, agriculture, forestry, fisheries, food, nutrition and related sciences in the context of rural development, sustainable resource use and poverty alleviation worldwide.
Can agroecological farming feed the world? Farmers' and academia's views.
If current global trends continue, sustained popula-tion growth and demands for richer and better-quality diets will require roughly double current crop production. However, current production practices threaten our planet through loss of habitat, wildlife extinction and modification of water cycling, just to name a few. Agriculture is among the most signifi-cant contributors to global warming, the thirstiest user of water supplies and the major polluter of groundwater. The debates on global food production challenges have become polarised, among both scientists and farmers, widening the gap between the advocates of industrial agriculture and global commerce, and the supporters of local food systems and organic farming. TT22 will review recent research results that address these challenges from various points of view, with different approaches. Discussions in plenary and thematic sessions, guided poster tours, and workshops will provide participants with new ideas to enhance our understanding of the potential capacity of agroecology to maintain and restore soil health, conserve biodiversity and adapt to climate changes and help us face future crises, together with meeting the challenge of feeding global populations.
On the occasion of this conference a special session will be devoted to the presentation of the "Hans H. Ruthenberg-Graduate-Award" and the " Hermann Eiselen-Science Award 2022" by the fiat panis foundation, Ulm.
The oral presentations of the Tropentag 2022 will be organised in four sessions of probably five parallel thematic groups. Posters will be presented in parallel guided poster sessions The exact time frame of these session will be communicated after selection of the submitted abstracts.
Organise your own Workshop
We offer you the opportunity to organise your own workshop, specifically adapted to your target audience. The idea is that you either network targeting a specific topic or you offer capacity building, tasks forces for projects and follow your own initiative. The only condition is that your topic should be related to tropical agriculture in a wider sense. The workshops are taking place on Tuesday September 13, 2022 from 13:00 to 17:00 h, Wednesday September 14, from 09:00 to 12:00 h. or on Friday September 16 from 14:00 to 18:00 h.
If you are interested you need to apply and describe the objective and topic of the workshop using the following template. Fill in the template and send it not later than 1st of May to infotropentag.de.
You will receive feedback of your application not later than 1st of June and in case of approval details such as room allocation, further logistics and potential services beyond the given ones will then be individually discussed with the Tropentag management.
The overall workshop plan with contact addresses will be made available on our website.
Especially a hybrid Tropentag conference requires participant fees, to pay for software and the organisation of the sessions.
For the in-person participants, the fee includes a conference bag, and refreshments during the conference breaks. The fee does not include accommodation, lunches, or the conference diner.
