Abstract
One of the social aspects of forest management is the existence of equality or justice within gender. To achieve the sustainability of conservation forest, community empowerment through forest community is established in the surrounding villages. The objectives of this research is to identify the gender roles in the forest farmer groups near Paliyan Sanctuary Reserve, Gunungkidul District, Indonesia.
A survey using questionnaire were conducted from two forest farmer groups which are KTH Hutan Lestari and KTH Karang Mulyo. In-depth interview and direct observation was also performed during regular meeting of the groups. The collected data then analysed using Harvard Analysis to determine the distribution roles between men and women in each forest farmer groups.
This study concluded that both in daily and forest community group activities are dominated by women. The productive activities of agriculture and livestock business are not only done by men but also by women, especially in the planting and houshold activities. The decision-making process in the community groups involve both men and women. Women also have equal opportunity regarding access and control toward natural resources and group activities. In conclusion, there is no gender discrimination in the daily and group activities in both forest farmer groups. Eventhough there is no gender inequality in the household and group activities in both of forest farmer groups, there are some recommendation for future improvement. Further research about the benefit and factor of women domination in the forest farmer groups is needed to confirm the fruitfulness of gender mainstreaming programme in the sustainable development goals
