Following the collapse of world coffee prices in 2001, which affected large number of coffee producing small"=scale farmers world"=wide, sustainability standards and certified markets have gained prominence among producer organisations, national governments and international donor agencies for their expected positive impacts on the welfare of poor small"=scale farmers. In the Ethiopian coffee sector, certification has gained the support of the government and policy makers as a solution to problems caused by volatile coffee prices. However, the growing body of literature on the impact of certification shows contradicting results confirming that the effectiveness of certification and sustainable initiatives highly depends on the local conditions in which they are implemented and enforced. Therefore, this paper seeks to analyse the welfare effect of certified coffee supply chains on small"=scale farmers in Oromia region in Ethiopia. It also aims at addressing the creditability concerns surrounding responsible trade initiatives at the local"=level and generating information regarding coffee production systems. A total of 250 interviews were carried out with smallholder forest coffee producers in both certified and non"=certified coffee cooperatives in three districts of Jimma region. The study uses a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods to analyse the data. The empirical findings suggest that certification schemes are not so successful in delivering the goods they are expected to. To begin with, most of the farmers involved in the survey had no knowledge about certification and were not able to attach any benefit to certification. Secondly, the social premium granted by most of the certification scheme didn't reach the farmers. The focus group discussions with the farmers also indicate that pre"=financing and credit is not at all available to the farmers. As to our observation, certification schemes seem to have no or low impact on poverty. }
