Continued reliance on drugs for the management of African animal trypanosomosis (AAT) in the cotton belt of West Africa can create drug resistance with negative implications for livestock productivity. Recent research on trypanocide use even suggests that farmers, facing a high prevalence of AAT and trypanocide resistance in that area, could improve the profitability of cattle keeping if they increase the current use. Such static analysis however ignores negative externalities of resistance development in the future resulting from an increase in current use of trypanocides.







In this study a bio"=economic model has been developed that incorporates the interactions between vector, host and farmers' management decisions and draws consequences in terms of costs and benefits. Using a dynamic programming model the identification of optimal management practices under the risk of trypanocide resistance can be determined. There are two major variables in farmers' criterion function which require empirical verification if the results are bound to be realistic for the socio"=economic context of West Africa, namely their risk attitudes and their time preferences. While there were many studies carried out in developing countries to elicit farmers' risk preferences using experimental economic approach few have combined such experiments with time preference assessments.







This study introduces an experimental design that combines the elicitation of attitudes towards risk and time. The experiments will be conducted in villages of south"=eastern Mali and south"=western Burkina Faso, where prior socio"=economic and epidemiological data had been collected in the course of past trypanocide resistance research efforts. Results are expected to contribute to a better understanding of strategic decision making of farmers under risk of drug resistance in West Africa.
