Tin mining has been responsible for the profound changes in the landscape of Barkin"=ladi Local Government of Plateau State. Land degradation through mining activities is largely responsible for changes in the social and economic structure of the area over the last 70 years. There has been an influx of many people from different part of Nigeria and a large section of the present population has acquired technical skills and experience in labour organisation, qualities likely to affect the timing and location of future industrial expansion within the country. As a result of tin mining many burrow pits were created which were impounded with water throughout the year. With decrease in the tin mining activities, most of the mining workers delved into reclaiming the degraded land and used the impounded water for irrigation farming. There is a growing interest in the irrigation farming which leads to competition in land and water among the inhabitant of the Plateau. The aim of this study is to determine the socio"=economic variables influencing land allocation to vegetable farming using tin mining ponds as a source of irrigation water for vegetable production. The study was conducted during the 2007/2008 dry season production. It was found that land tenure ship, contact with extension agents and membership of farmers to cooperative organisations positively influenced reclaimed land allocation to irrigated vegetable production. Therefore, provision of extension services, policy adjustment to ease land accessibility and capacity building through farmers' co"=operative are important strategies that will increase land allocation and consequently improved family income.
