Sustainable forest management and approaches like participatory forest management, watershed management, certification, etc, has become a dominant paradigm for the management of remaining global forest. This study investigates the regeneration and population structures of woody species in Chilimo Forest for better understanding of the significance of participatory forest management. Galessa, Chilimo, Gaji and Qarsa Allati forest user group forests (patches) were selected following stratified systematic sampling; and stems ($>$ \mbox{10\,cm} DBH) were sampled in 20 m\,$\times$\,\mbox{20\,m} quadrants; saplings ($>$ \mbox{1.3\,m} height and $\leq$ \mbox{10\,cm} DBH) and seedlings (0.30--\mbox{1.30\,m} height) in five 5 m\,$\times$\,\mbox{5\,m} subplots along transect lines laid from ridge top of the mountain to the bottom. A total of 42 species were recorded in all studied plots; and 25, 34, 27 and 32 in Galessa, Chilimo, Gaji and Q. Allati patch respectively. There was significant difference among patches in seedling and sapling densities while was not in stem. Good regeneration was exhibited by 60, 53, 41 and 47 percent of species while poor by 12, 21, 41 and 38 in Galessa, Chilimo, Gaji and Q. Allati patch respectively. The overall DBH size class distribution showed a near inverse J-shape in all patches. This normal population structure was exhibited by about 57, 48, 40 and 33 percent of species in Galessa, Chilimo, Gaji and Q. Allati patch respectively, a result which contrasts previous studies in Chilimo Forest. Generally, the study reveals positive change in the regeneration and population structures of Chilimo Forest. However, this improvement can only be partly explained in Gaji and Q. Allati, because unsatisfactory regeneration of species may indicate an imminent danger of further forest loss in these patches. Species such as Hagenia abyssinica, Ilex mitis, Teclea nobilis, and Schefflera abyssinica also showed abnormal population structure and no regeneration. Finally, permanent sample plot based further investigation and monitoring should be paramount important for sustainability of Chilimo Forest.}
