\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Rural communities in North Kordofan State, Sudan rely solely on subsistent traditional agricultural farming where erratic rainfall, biotic and abiotic factors pose deleterious problems for production leading to food insecurity. Therefore, the people under such circumstances frequently depend on national and international relief. The natural resources are not sufficiently and rationally utilised due to the unsatisfactory extension services and poor resource management skills of the rural communities.

In view of that, an interdisciplinary partnership programme of technical knowledge and capacity building was emerged from University of Kordofan (Faculty of Natural Recourses and Environmental Studies), the German Development Service (DED) the Advisory office --- Elobeid, Sudanese Environment Conservation Society --- Rahad Branch (SECS), and two Community Based Organisations (CBOs).

The pilot programme was generally aims at enhancing self reliance of rural communities through integrated and improved natural resources management cycle and rational use of resources leading to reduction of poverty and improvement of food security status. Using a participatory approach considering CBOs as responsible partners, the training programme was intended to develop project planning, organising and implementation capacities of rural organisations to sustain outcomes. After a purposive situation analysis, 7 training blocks consisting of conceptual framework and field practice on natural resources and cross cutting topics were delivered to each community. Additionally, 3 field visits/ follow up were launched. In the end of the programme several sequences of evaluation (questionnaires, field visits and workshop) were implemented. Ultimately, a final public agricultural day, organised by the CBOs in each village with various stakeholders, was done to wrap up all programme activities and highlight lessons learned.

Management of natural resources and cross cutting topics were successfully trained theoretically and practised with high participation per village for sustainable resource planning and use. Food security and livelihood were improved. Results were reflected in environment conservation, nutritional and health status. Two communities have been mobilised and rural development is promoted.
