A large portion of the population of Benin remains dependant on subsistence agriculture for their livelihoods.  As in many developing countries, subsistence farming is often constrained by a scarcity of water. In order to help farmers to obtain water and to secure their livelihoods, some irrigation equipment were transferred in Benin: human"=powered pumps (Naguézé Treadle pump, Naguézé Manual pump, Afridev Pump, India 2 Pump), fuel"=powered pumps and electric pumps. Despite the high demand from farmers and the efforts of designers of appropriate technologies that can solve the many problems of the irrigators, it should be noted that most of these technologies do not reach the end users. In order to establish constraints affecting adoption of irrigation technologies, a study"=based analysis including direct feedback from farmers and stakeholders in the irrigation sector was carryed out. The method used is based on surveys that performed near 212 participants in seventy"=one of Benin's seventy"=seven parishes. The interviewees included government structures, NGOs, commercial operators, manufacturers of technologies and end users. The results of the survey analysis identify the most significant factors affecting the adoption of the irrigation pumps.  These are: compatibility with access to the local water source, purchase price, cost of operation/maintenance, the condition of the soil, the users' lack of access to information about efficient technologies; lack of organised markets; inadequate transfer of technologies; inefficient or absent distribution networks. Finally, the study shows that the irrigation sector must be central because without water there are no agricultural outputs and then no food.}
