Nitrogen is most limiting resource that needed in highest amount by crop and affect many of the physiological process. Efficient use of N is the most important method for increasing agricultural production. Genetically differences in nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) have been documented for many of crops. In order to evaluating the effects of using different amounts of nitrogen fertiliser (N) on NUE and its component (i.e. N uptake efficiency and N utilisation efficiency) in maize hybrids an experiment was conducted in 2005 and 2006 in experimental field of Lorestan University, Iran. The experiment was split plots based on complete randomised blocks design (CRBD) with four replications. Different levels of N (control, 100, 200, 300, 400 and \mbox{500\,kg} N ha$^{-1}$) were in the main plots and two hybrids of maize (short season and full season) were in the subplots. Based on results N treatments significantly affected NUE in both of maize hybrids and there was a negative correlation between amount of applied N and NUE. Similar relation observed also for NUE components and by increasing nitrogen fertiliser, N uptake efficiency and N utilisation efficiency decreased significantly. Increasing N use resulted in decreasing relative contribution of N utilisation in comparison with N uptake efficiency. In all of the N level, the full season hybrid has higher NUE and N uptake efficiency, in comparison with short season and it might be related to higher rooting dept and longer growth period in full season hybrid. Based on these results using full season hybrid of maize in all of the N level, in comparison with short season hybrid is justified.
