The Food Processing Industry (FPI) is one of the prime industries in India in terms of production, consumption, export and growth prospects and is considered as crucial for Agricultural development. For instance, the industry is one of the largest industries ranking fifth in production, consumption, export and expected growth. In addition, it also provides employment opportunities to a large extent. It is a large sector that covers activities such as agriculture, horticulture, plantation, animal husbandry and fisheries. Analysis of prospects and opportunities of the industry indicate that, the industry forms vital linkage and synergy between the two pillars of the economy i.e. industry and agriculture. The industry has no dearth for market opportunities on account of thriving domestic consumption and new avenues of foreign demand. Food processing leads to significant employment generation not only directly but also across the supply chain in the production from supply of raw materials, storage of produce,finished products and distribution of food products to consumers. But the food processing industry is constrained with inadequate infrastructure, inefficient supply chain, high packaging cost and cultural preferences for fresh food. Considering the wide prospects and opportunities of food processing industry, efforts must be made to do away with the hindering factors both on the demand and supply side. India can become a leading food supplier to the world if issues of scale and branding are taken care of. With low farmer price realisations and wastage in the food supply chain being significant even with the current level of production, only processing of agricultural products can secure farmer's incomes against a slump in price as well as reduce wastage's. Agriculture will keep on playing a vital role in the Indian economy and food processing will go a long way for providing opportunities for sustainable and profitable agriculture in time to come.
