Subsistence agriculture is one of the vital sources of small farmers' livelihoods in northwest Pakistan. Nonetheless, lack of finances for the purchase of agriculture inputs impedes crop productivity and farmers income in the area.  The government of Pakistan has recently taken several initiatives to meet the financial needs of the small farmers. The Zari Taraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL) is one of the leading credit institutions, which has launched agriculture credit scheme to boost agriculture production and farmers income. 



This paper examines the role of the credit scheme on farmers' productivity in two selected villages in upper Dir District in northwest Pakistan. The local branch of the ZTBL was approached to identify the target farmers. Primary data was collected in various villages from 60 farmers.  A sample of each thirty Participant and non"=participant farmers were interviewed using an interview schedule. Descriptive statistics and Ordinary Least Square (OLS) method were used to asses the impact of credit on the crop productivity and income of farmers. The findings reveals that micro"=credit has a significantly enhanced the productivity of wheat, maize and vegetables in the area. However, our results unfolds the fact that micro"=credit scheme has benefited mainly big farmers. More interesting only male farmers have been targeted in the program.  We recommend that targeting smallholders, reducing interest rate, bringing the women folk into the mainstream should be the goal of national agricultural policy in future.   Moreover, the Bank should focus on an extensive monitoring programme to ensure that the credit is utilised exclusively for agriculture purposes.
