The exotic pig breeds compared to the local Ashanti black pig not only grows more quickly, but produce bigger litters and bigger adults, and they are more efficient converters of feed. This obviously translates in to higher income for the farmer. But high feeding cost makes exotic pig farming less attractive for Ghanaian pig farmers. Currently feeding constitutes about \mbox{60\,\%} of the production cost. This is further aggravated by the ever increasing prices of feed ingredients locally, particularly maize and protein sources.  For the success of exotic pig farming in Ghana, there is the need for research to be focused on making exotic pig farming easier and attractive for local pig farmers.



A study was conducted to determine comparative growth rates of two breeds of pig namely Pure Danish Large White (DLW) and its cross with Dutch Hampshire (DLW\,$\times$\,DH) fed a daily ration of \mbox{1.0\,kg} of concentrate recommended by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MOFA). Twenty weaners, comprising ten of each breed were raised at the Animal farm complex of BNARI and fed this ratio in two parts of \mbox{0.5\,kg} at 8.30am and 3.00pm daily for a period of ten weeks post weaning. Water was provided ad libitum for the purposes of drinking and wallowing. Univariate ANOVA of results shows that Pure breed DLW recorded mean daily weight gain of 382.38$\pm$ \unitfrac[26.19]{g}{d} which was significantly higher than 297.70$\pm$ \unitfrac[18.27]{g}{d} for the cross DLW\,$\times$\,DH. This is however lower than mean daily growth rate recorded in similar studies of DLW in Nigeria, Ireland and Denmark and that presupposes that improvements can be made to reach the potential of the DLW in Ghana.
