\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

This research was conducted in Jabel El Dair area; North Kordofan State in period between (2007--2008).The aims of this paper was to assess the current situation of wildlife resources and to characterise the species diversity. The area was divided into six units according to water resources availability. 100 questionnaire sheets were distributed to the local inhabit people. Direct interviews were done with farmers, poachers and key persons. Data were analysed using Descriptive Statistics Analysis. The results found that, this area was very rich in natural resources diversity mainly wildlife animals. About 40 bird species were recorded in addition to migratory birds constantly have been seen. There was 18 mammalians species such as gazelle drocas, greater kudu and baboon. Reptiles were found in big numbers, especially in area of no fire hazards were. Wildlife faces deleterious condition by poaching. It was found that \mbox{75\,\%} of the respondents practice poaching in addition to some poachers who come from outside. Due to the ecological changes wildlife was also affected. Some wild animals had probably migrated and some of them disappeared e.g. lions, leopards, African hunting- dogs and giraffes. Local traditions that prohibit bird hunting played a considerable role in bird conservation. Some pockets that contain wild animals in the area were inaccessible. Continuous tree cutting, frequent fires, mechanised agricultural expansion, water scarcity and extended refugee camps caused further pressure on natural resources specially wildlife. Lack of extension services and absence of forest and wildlife conservation plans were the main problems handicapped the management. Water sources were scarce and not evenly distributed in the area. The paper recommended urgent action for protecting the area of Jabel El Dair as a unique ecological zone to conserve endangered animal species in Sudan and it should be declared as a protected area for the benefit of both wildlife and local communities. }
