The Lacandona Rainforest has been declared as one of the highest biodiversity spots in Mexico. Its richness belongs not only to an enormous diversity of flora and fauna, but also to archeological sites and a mosaic of different live Mayan cultures. For this reason, its conservation is a priority. In this context, ecotourism has become one of the main catalyst of social, economic, and environmental changes in the Biosphere Reserve of Montes Azules. Nevertheless, ecotourism has not been always a viable development and conservation tool supported by environmental education strategies. For this reason, the Mexican Norm NMX-AA-133-SCFI-2006 promotes the certification of sustainable ecotourism, taking the environmental education as a main support along its requirements







The Experiential Environmental Education Program for Ecotouristic Centers (PEAVCE by by its acronym in Spanish), presented in this paper, is the result of a participative process and the comparative analysis of local interests, knowledge and attitudes of 5 certified sustainable ecotouristic centres and 5 in process to be certified in the Lacandona Jungle. 







The PEAVCE was developed in the ecotouristic centre called ``Campamento Río Lacanjá'' and promotes the active participation of visitors, local people and service providers to build up socio"=environmental knowledge, attitudes and values focused mainly to 4 thematic axis: Environmental, Cultural, Social and Human Development.







Experiential learning, as the proposed educative model, gives the opportunity to local people living in and around the influence zone of the biosphere reserve to create solutions and take actions to stop the lost of biodiversity and other environmental issues concerned to their needs and interests.







The amazing environmental conditions of the Biosphere reserve ``Montes Azules'' offers to the PEAVCE the opportunity to promote a new educational programme to a different public target, to diversify the economical incomes in low season of tourism, to involve local and foreign population and to fulfil the requirements of NMX-133, in order to be sustainable and conserve its biodiversity. The flexibility and dynamism of the proposed model makes it a potential tool to orientate alternative educative proposals in other ecotouristic centres established in different biosphere reserves of Mexico.
