Ratanhia [Krameria lappacea (Dombey) Burdet \& B.B.Simpson] is a widely used medicinal plant which is exclusively collected from whe wild and produced only in Peru in noteworthy quantities. Nearly 10 years ago a project for the sustainable wild harvest was initiated in collaboration between WELEDA AG, the Universidad Nacional de San Augustin de Arequipa (Peru), the GTZ and botconsult GmbH. For this purpose basic botanical and ecological data were obtained, a protected area of collection declared in collaboration with the INRENA. A long"=term management plan was developed for the area. The management plan was based on the biological investigations and included best collection and enrichment seeding as central aspects. Ratanhia was collected and exported for WELEDA AG on a yearly bases. However, early on several problems started to crop up: The Peruvian authorities categorically refused to undertake the policing part and massive illegal collection of Ratanhia undermined all efforts for sustainability. In the past few years harvest levels dropped dramatically and the bulk of the natural stands has been depleted by illegal collection. Moreover, in spite of the guaranteed exclusive use of the collection area for Ratanhia by WELEDA by the Peruvian authorities, a preliminary mining concession has been granted for an area including most of the "protected area". Thus, access for the collection of Ratanhia is no longer possible and, moreover, the entire area is in the progress of being irreparably destroyed by the mining activities. At the same time, illegal collection of Ratanhia without any type of management plan or permit is progressing at an alarming rate all over Peru. The efforts for a long"=term commitment for a sustainable wild harvest are thus undermined by a lack of political will and administrative capability. To ensure responsible sourcing of Ratanhia without falling into these pitfalls in the future, the sourcing strategy has been altered and is now nomadic with detailed harvest and enrichment seeding prescriptions to ensure that natural stands of Ratanhia are minimally affected by collection. Under the current political and social conditions this appears to be the only realistically possible and responsible sourcing strategy. }
