\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

The rice which is produced with the help of gene modification technology is known as genetically modified (GM) rice, which helps to raise a level of Vit-A in consumers. Presently the developing nations are facing the problem of Vit A deficiency, which causes various problems in children: therefore GM rice would be a solution to defeat this problem. India is one of the major rice producer and consumer around the world. Currently GM rice is under field trials at several locations across the India, and the commercial release is expected in the current future, hence an analysis of the consumer acceptance and willingness to pay (WTP) for GM rice is necessary to see the future of GM rice in India. We have conducted an interview based student survey in 2009. A double bounded contingent valuation method (CVM) was used for the analysis of consumers' WTP for GM rice. The findings of this study show that around \mbox{55\,\%} of the respondents would buy GM rice at the current market prices of normal rice. The consumers mean WTP for GM rice would be around \mbox{5\,\%} price premium. The consumers income level, consumers buying behaviour for the recently available novel food products in a market and an importance of nutritional values of foods have a negative effects on consumers' WTP for GM rice, consumer anticipation that GM foods will solve the food security problem of the developing nations, buying behaviour for GM foods, and perception about the positive health effects of GM foods have a positive influence on consumers' WTP. Moreover, the socio"=demographic variables and consumers perceptions about the environmental and health risks of GM foods have no influence on consumers' WTP. Overall this study suggests that most of the Indian consumers have perceived GM rice positively, and considerable level of GM rice buyers are present in India. Further a positive communication about GM foods will help to develop the GM rice market in India.}
