\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

Baobab fruits are traded locally for both subsistence and cash income; and play a key role to the rural household's day life. However, the contribution of local trade in baobab fruits to rural household's income is not acknowledged. This study, therefore, was conducted with main objective of assessing and analysing the contribution of local trade in baobab fruits to rural livelihoods and to identify factors influencing household level of engagement in the local business. Three villages were selected based on their proximity from Al Abassia local market. Purposely sampling was carried out on 60 households (20 households in each village) trading baobab fruits using structured questionnaire interviews and direct observations during 2008/2009 season. The results indicate that rural households practice diverse livelihood activities mainly agriculture, livestock husbandry, baobab fruits trading and off"=farm activities for survival. The annual average income contribution from baobab fruits local trade accounted for about \mbox{35\,\%} of the total household annual income aggregated across wealth categories. The contribution of baobab fruits local trade varies with proximity of the household village from Al Abassia local market; and wealth status of the household. Households closed to the local market generate more income than those at a distant location. The relative contribution of baobab fruits local trade to household income of the poor was \mbox{33\,\%}, for the medium \mbox{35\,\%} and \mbox{37\,\%} for the rich households. This variation shows that in relative terms the rich households generate more income than the poor or medium. The study concluded that baobab fruits local trade plays a significant role in improving the livelihoods of the rural households. Access to the baobab fruits market and microfinance are recommended to increase the household's income from the local business.}
