The Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development of Germany (BMZ) assigned the Advisory Service on Agricultural Research for Development (BEAF) of GTZ with the design of the research programme ``Adaptation of African Agriculture to Climate Change'' to get a better idea of the local and regional impact of climate change, particularly in Africa. To develop measures of adaptation to climate change and to improve regional climate models nine research projects have received funding totalling \EURtm{} 10 million for three years starting in 2008.



Several cooperations have emerged between the nine projects after an initial meeting in June 2009 and even further collaborations beyond the three years of funding are in discussion. A second meeting of the nine projects in May 2010 back to back with the launch of the Challenge Program Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS) of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research-CGIAR offers the opportunity for an exchange of the experiences and results of the nine projects of the German research programme with the new evolving research program.



The necessity for interdisciplinary research cooperation across country borders especially in Africa is inevitable. African farmers already recognise climatic changes. Preliminary results show, they have to adapt their agricultural practices to a greater variability and unpredictability of climatic conditions in the near future. The German research programme is set up to better understand the local impact of climate change and to develop measures of adaptation. Therefore a network of collaborating partners within each of the nine projects works on a specific task ranging from climatology, classical agricultural disciplines - cropping systems, plant breeding, grazing management and agroforestry - to water management and policy research. Regional focuses are the Sahel countries in West Africa with Senegal, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Ghana as well as Eastern Africa, in particular Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Mozambique and Zambia. 



An overview on the established collaborations will be presented as well as an overview on preliminary results regarding adaptation measures.
