Baobab and tamarind are multipurpose tree species: their products can generate income and improves the quality of diets. In Benin and Mali, there is an existing domestic market for both species. The presence of local markets could be used as an indicator of commercial potential of any underutilised species. However, to develop and strengthen the local markets it is necessary to describe the market characteristics, document the value chain, map all its actors, and target consumers and the type of products in demand. The local market characteristics and channels in Benin and Mali are described, both quantitatively and qualitatively, through semi"=structured interviews with local producers, rural assemblers, wholesalers, distributors, processors, retailers and consumers. Baobab fruit pods are more harvested in Benin than in Mali (\unitfrac[1415]{kg}{y} and \unitfrac[26]{kg}{y}, respectively). At the other hand, baobab leaves and tamarind fruit pods are mainly harvested in Mali. Beninese producers sell all their baobab and tamarind products, whereas these products are mainly home consumed by Malian producers. In Benin, wholesalers mostly buy their products at the farm gate, while Malian wholesalers mainly buy their products from distributors. Generally, the quantity bought by Malian wholesalers is bigger than by Beninese (e.g. \mbox{8806\,kg} baobab fruit pulp per year in Mali versus \unitfrac[2477]{kg}{y} in Benin). Conversely, Beninese retailers trade bigger quantities than Malian (e.g. \mbox{317\,kg} baobab fruit pulp per year in Benin versus \unitfrac[85]{kg}{y} in Mali). Purchase and selling prices are comparable for both wholesalers and retailers. Baobab and tamarind fruit pulp is mainly processed as juice or syrup. Processors in Mali sell their products for a higher price than in Benin (e.g. 1007 CFA baobab fruit juice per litre in Mali versus \unitfrac[417]{CFA}{l} in Benin). Consumers of baobab and tamarind products in both countries have similar purchasing habits. In conclusion, quantities and values of traded products differ not only between species and products, but also between actors and countries. Variations are observed in the value chain of baobab and tamarind products and actors have slightly different functions in the chain in Benin and Mali.}
