The damages caused by the millipedes Bandeirenica caboverdus constitute a major problem for the agricultural sector in Cape Verde, especially on the two infected islands of the archipelago, Santo Antão and São Vicente.



There were no effective strategies against millipedes in Cape Verde until the beginning of this research. None of the biological and chemical control method tested at that time have lead to any considerable success.



To protect the agriculture in the non"=infected islands were the fundamental reason for the internal quarantine measures undertaken by the Government. Those measures left the two islands isolated, without access to the markets in other islands for the increasing agricultural production. In order to solve the problem of export, a new Government Ordinance is under preparation. Some fruits and vegetables from Santo Antão and São Vicente will be allowed for commercialisation in other islands of the archipelago after adequate treatment and inspection. 



The results obtained on the course of the research on the development biology of the species make possible the drawing of the first recommendations on methods to reduce their population density in the two infected islands.



The first recommendation was the use of the self"=made trap with bait of fruits. The farmers should collect and destroy the millipedes after attracting them to the fruits during the night. 



It is also recommended to work the land regularly, especially after rain and traditional irrigation. This practice reaches and disrupts the developmental stages that occur within the soil on banana plantations.



It is important to separate banana plantations and vegetable plots. The banana plantations serve as a place of reproduction, the juveniles leaving the soil easily find vegetables that are close by.



The main purpose of the present research work was also to find the most effective method of treatment to be implemented in the Post-Harvest Centre. The conclusions appointed that the immersion of fruits and vegetables in water at 26$\pm$1ºC for 20 minutes results effective and removes \mbox{100\,\%} of millipedes. After this treatment, the tested products can be commercialised free of millipedes in the other islands of the archipelago.}
