The genetic characterisation of individual animals is indispensable for proper herd management. Genetic diversity within 80 unrelated individuals of a flock of Boer goats, from our own breeding stock (Goettingen, Germany), was determined using 13 microsatellite markers (STR) originally isolated from sheep and goats. This panel of markers was also exploited for assigning parentage to 21 kids resulting from an embryo transfer program. Means for average number of alleles per locus, polymorphic information content (PIC), non exclusion probabilities, expected and observed heterozygosity were calculated using the software CERVUS\textregistered{}. Differences in expected heterozygosity, number of alleles and PIC among the STR markers were observed. Three loci (OarFCB11, OarFCB20 and INRA0132) deviated significantly ($p < 0.01$) from the Hardy Weinberg equilibrium; \mbox{77\,\%} of the loci showed high polymorphism with an average number of 7.46 alleles per locus, average expected heterozygosity was 0.6182 and mean polymorphic information content 0.5766. Considering all loci, combined non exclusion probability for first parent (NE-P1) was 0.0209, for second parent (NE-P2) 0.0007, for parent pair 0.00000422 and 1.06$\times$10\textsuperscript{-6} for identity. Paternities of 21 kids were resolved with an estimated pedigree error rate of \mbox{14.3\,\%}. Exclusion of parents was obtained by mismatching in at least 4 microsatellite loci. Dropping of loci with PIC value less than 0.5 did not affect the effectiveness of other markers to distinguish individuals. From the results it may be concluded that the recipe of 13 loci may indeed serve as a suitable tool for herd management, enabling confirmation of progeny records prior to selection of breeding animals.}
