Pregnancy"=associated glycoprotein (PAG) is being produced by the placenta and released to the maternal circulation. In cows and sheep, the determination of PAG in blood serves as a useful tool for pregnancy detection. The present study addresses the question to what extent plasma PAG determination may serve a similar purpose in goats. Blood samples were drawn by jugular venipuncture in 8 synchronised and artificially inseminated pluriparous Boer goat does. During the first 7 weeks and the last 4 weeks of pregnancy samples were drawn twice weekly, during the remaining pregnancy and until 4 weeks postpartum once weekly. Plasma PAG concentration was determined by competitive enzyme"=linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Purified bovine PAG served as standard and tracer and sheep anti"=rabbit immunoglobulin g served as coating antibody. Antisera were a) caprine (AS 706) and b) ovine (AS 780). With the caprine antibody (AS 706) a steep increase was recorded from day 21 onward, reaching a maximum of \unitfrac[72]{ng}{mL} between days 56 and 63. Thereafter, PAG decreased gradually to about \unitfrac[23]{ng}{mL} at parturition and reached basal levels of \unitfrac[0.3]{ng}{mL} 4 weeks postpartum. The results achieved with the ovine antiserum (AS 780), closely resembled those described above: a steep increase between days 21 and 56 was followed by a gradual decrease until a couple of weeks post partum. Goats carrying more than one kid had higher PAG concentrations than those carrying singletons, though differences were not statistically significant except for days 49 and 91 when using caprine (AS706), and days 56 and 63 when using ovine antiserum (AS780). The PAG profile during pregnancy differs substantially from that typical for ewes and cows.  Nonetheless the determination of PAG concentration in blood can serve as a suitable means of pregnancy detection in goats from day 21 of conception onward.}
