\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
A major world oilseed crop, sesame (\textit{Sesamum indicum}) is primarily grown by small farmers in developing countries.

In Nigeria sesame is widely cultivated in the northern and central parts of the country. Productivity is low caused by the small scale sesame producers lack in terms of organisational degree, access to credit, inputs and services, marketing skills and adoption of improved production techniques just to mention a few.

Upgrading production has to go hand in hand with involving all the players in the value chain, the traders, processors, input suppliers and extension agencies.

For the 2009 season the Employment"=oriented Private Sector Development Programme (EoPSD), a programme implemented by the German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) and funded by the German Government, initiated the implementation of a sesame improvement programme in Nasarawa State applying a value chain approach.

A local commercial bank provided loans to farmers, an insurance company crop insurance, a seed company improved seeds, the state government extension services to farmer groups and an agricultural commodities trading company a buyback arrangement for the sesame seeds after harvest at market prices. EoPSD facilitated the whole process, sensitised the farmers in the communities and provided support for the establishment of farmer groups.

A total of 1000 farmers in 56 groups received training on improved production techniques in sesame. Out of this total number 503 farmers were able to raise the required collaterals to qualify for the loan"=package which included crop insurance and improved seeds.

The majority of farmers were very satisfied with the programme. The linkage with the bank and input supplier enabled them to hire labour to start cultivation, purchase inputs and gave them access to a better performing seed variety. Coupled with the improved agricultural practices this resulted in a 30--\mbox{50\,\%} higher yield and a higher income in return. The buyback agreement served both the farmers and the trading company: for the farmers marketing was easy and the trader received the seeds already bulked by the farmer groups.
