In Southern countries, agriculture is composed of a variety of small"=holder systems, and of large plantations that produce exported goods and which model has been inherited from the colonial times. These large estates face the need to tie up the labour force to the plantation, as the areas where they set up the production are usually remote and lack the basic commodities. In Indonesia, it is by the way of a paternalist organisation of the work that multinational firms manage the production and process of primary goods. The control exerted on the labour force is not limited to working activities. Practices of power overwhelm the domestic and private sphere, and the labour force has no capacity of autonomy, no social and economical independency. How come workers subject themselves in a consenting behaviour to this total domination? The monographic study of domination practices enlightens more general situations and processes such as the values of the spirit of capitalism and the possibilities for its evolution: for the workers, the possibilities of building resistance or developing autonomy (by the way of access to land for instance) are very limited. In this sense, their horizon is limited and the one of their children as well. Organisational changes are not bound to emerge from social claims as they are destroyed by the strong exercise of power. Within international firms managed by directors who have been in the most prestigious management universities of the world, old"=fashioned neo"=colonialist systems still have the wind in their sails. This reflection is to be considered in a more global one of the construction of democracy in developing countries and the position of rural areas in this construction.    }
