Geographical indications (GIs) as a tool to promote socio"=economic livelihoods of rural communities have gained more interest among policy makers and in academia alike since its protection has been ensured multilaterally under the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement in the World Trade Organisation (WTO). Thung Kula Rong-Hai Thai Hom Mali Rice (TKR) from Northeastern Thailand is registered as GI since 2007. A GI certification is licensed to producers and other business operators of the GI production line through a membership application in a GI-Club. It provides protection to its producers against any counterfeiting by parties other than the genuine producers. This paper aims to identify the determining factors that are likely to predict the behaviour of Thai Jasmine rice households in the Thung Kula Rong-Hai (TKRH) area in adopting a GI certification and to estimate the marginal effects of key factors on the probability of adoption. The empirical analysis in this paper follows a two"=step approach --- first, logit regression models are used to find the key determinants for adoption of GI and finally, marginal effects of these key factors are estimated to show the relative strength of the determinants. All analyses are based on data collected through a formal survey of 541 Thai Jasmine rice households from two districts of the TKRH area. The results suggest that institutional and social factors such as information, transportation costs, member of cooperative and trust influence the decision to obtain the GI certification of the Thai Jasmine rice households. In terms of marginal effects, member of cooperative has the highest marginal effect on adoption of GI certification followed by trust and information. Successful introduction and promotion of a GI system therefore depend particularly on the information and facilitation provided by the government to GI actors and finally on the level of trust of these GI stakeholders given to such a new system.}
