A significant proportion of the urban dwellers in Ethiopia now live below poverty line and living conditions are steadily declining. International Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) are thought to play a major role in poverty reduction activities. Compassion International Ethiopia (CIE) is one of the international NGOs working in the urban and suburban areas of the country. The study was designed to identify the impact of CIE projects in Awassa, Ethiopia: investigate the knowledge and capacities of migrants and program possibilities for CIE; and consider development opportunities for national, regional, and especially local NGOs.



In 2008, data were collected through individual interviews with mothers/fathers of 110 households (55 CIE supported and 55 unsupported poor neighbouring households) in Awassa using semi?structured questionnaires. Five enumerators (3 males and 2 females) were trained for data collection. Focus group discussions were held separately with mothers and fathers from supported and unsupported families to validate the results obtained through individual interviews and gain a greater insight in to the topics of interest.



Generally, supported households were found in a better food security status relative to their reported situation previously. The contribution of CIE was clearly observed in households? increased diet diversity, material assets, self-help institutions? membership, and reduced school drop-out rate. 



Respondents reported an interest in urban agriculture participation, although important challenges like reliable finance systems, available land and water, and animal feed for the particular attraction to livestock production remain largely unsolved. Food production knowledge may present less of a problem as many respondents had migrated to Awassa from rural farming communities and had agricultural experience.



The current study indicates that NGOs, including CIE, can contribute to a reduction in urban poverty. NGOs, including CIE, should try to institutionalize activities locally to promote sustainability and minimize dependency on external support. Improved program implementation requires better adjusting project(s) to children?s age and planning project design in context of rising prices of foodstuffs. A culture of local NGO development, perhaps growing from the self-help groups, should be encouraged.}
