Mango fruit is one of the most abundant fruit crops in Nigeria. Its consumption is purely seasonal and the pattern of consumption is basically by eating while fresh.  Availability of mango off"=season has not been given much attention in the past apparently due to the lack of knowledge of appropriate preservation technology, which has resulted to economic loss to the farmers, pollution to the environment by the waste and non"=availability of the product off"=season. It is therefore envisaged that the design of a mango slicing machine that will hasten its drying rate could contribute greatly in preserving and increasing its shelf life. Slicing as a unit operation in making mango chips has hitherto been done manually.



To reduce the drudgery involved in manual slicing of mango fruits, a small"=scale mechanised mango slicing machine was designed, fabricated and tested.  The machine components include, two hoppers, slicing blade unit, collecting tray, spring loaded mango press and the main frame. The machine is powered by a 1420 rpm, 0.75 kW, single"=phase electric motor. It was fabricated from locally available materials.



The reciprocating movement of the slicing blades causes slicing effect on the mango which is fed through the hopper while the slices and the seeds are dropped by gravity into the collecting tray located beneath the machine frame.  The performance of the machine was evaluated in terms of slicing efficiency, slicing capacity and uniformity of mango slices.  The slicing efficiency of the machine was found to be \mbox{70\,\%} which implies that it is suitable for mechanisation of mango slicing.  The machine is cheap and easy to operate.
