Abstract

The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of type of feed on Nilotic does milk composition. The diets used are the convention that based on sorghum grains and groundnut cake as energy and protein sources, respectively. The non conventional diet that based on molasses and urea as respective energy and protein sources. In the experiment, it kidded does were divided into two diet group based of matching average live weight and assigned to the two diet randomly. Each age group composed of eight individuals accommodates and fed in groups of two animals each. The milk samples were collected monthly until the does stopped letting milk down. Each milk samples were tested for the contents of fat, protein, lactose, Total Solid, Solid Non Fat and the net energy stored in milk. The data obtained were analysed for the effect on milk composition used two way analysis of variance. Whenever, the milk samples collected monthly the result indicated that the diet treatment had no effect on the parameters under study. However, both conventional and non conventional groups had significantly high records of fat content and energy value towards the end of lactation period. The results conducted that the non conventional diet which is a cost reducing diet produced milk of composition not different from that produced by the conventional diet which brings ruminants in competition with man and poultry in sorghum grains demand. The results also concluded that Nilotic does milk of low energy content when compared to other goats.
