\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Nigeria, the most populous African nation is greatly endowed with natural and human resources. There is a wide variation in climate from the Salt water swamp, the Fresh water swamp, the Rain forest, through the Guinea savannah and the Sudan to the Sahel savannah, each climatic zone providing a unique resource base for agriculture.  However the country is faced with numerous challenges such as poverty, hunger, malnutrition, poor leadership, low level of agro"=infrastructural development. These problems led to Food insecurity, which constitutes a major challenge as well as a major threat to the survival of the Nigerian nation. Several local and international programmes have been adopted in time past to combat the problem. However this menace remains a major threat causing hunger and malnutrition particularly among the rural poor. In this study the causes and remedies of food insecurity in Nigeria are presented with a view to providing a lasting solution to the problem. About seventy percent of Nigerians live in the rural areas, thus a major intervention is needed in these areas to tackle the problems of food insecurity.  Adequate mechanisation programmes and strategies need be put in place to match the Nigerian situation. Agricultural lands are generally diminishing and a single farm holder would find it difficult to acquire tens or hundreds of hectares necessary for large scale mechanisation due to the present land tenure system. An urgent review of agricultural systems, policies, research and funding is required in order to establish a solid foundation for agro"=industrial development in Nigeria. The international community would also need to develop appropriate mechanisation strategies for Africa and in particular, Nigeria to reduce the drudgery experience of rural"=poor farmers. }
