Urbanisation is increasing in Africa. In 2002 the United Nations reported that \mbox{38\,\%} of Africans lived in urban areas. N'Djaména, the capital of Chad, has grown rapidly in recent years and today has an estimated population of nearly one million people. Vegetable production in N'Djaména's urban and periurban areas makes an important contribution to food demand of the growing urban population, provides a regular income to producers and constitutes a source of employment of many urban dwellers.

The objective of this study was to gain an overview of vegetable production within and in the fringe of N'Djaména by examining its constraints and potentialities and by proposing recommendations for improvement.

Data were collected from Oct 06 to Marsh 09 from the survey by administering a standardised questionnaire to 60 randomly selected vegetable producers and 4 associations of growers representing UPA. Additional data were obtained through field observations.

The results illustrate that food security and income generation are the main driving forces for all producers to become involved in UPA. The survey has shown that accessibility of and access to land, irrigation water, inputs and market remain the crucial problem by more than \mbox{50\,\%} of the producers. The impact of this is reflected in production and levels of farm incomes, thereby the agriculture background of growers and their method of marketing play a central role. The study established that the institutionalisation of administrative procedures relating to UPA and the creation of technical and agronomical favourable preconditions for UPA by urban planer could contribute appreciably to reduce the obstacles of UPA and would generate substantially better economic opportunities for the producers.
