The German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development co"=funded a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) between a Ghanaian timber plantation company and the German Foundation for Nature Conservation in Africa. The overall objective of the project was to introduce models for sustainable development through adapted land"=use methods in the peripheral zones of forest plantations in the Ashanti region in Ghana.







Objectives



At present, the contributions of the agricultural sector remain far below its potential in Ghana. The prevalent slash and burn agricultural practice with the use of fire is a constant threat to sustainable land"=use as fires often run out of control and destroy thousands of hectares each year. In the project area several activities were identified to meet people's demand and simultaneously avoid further land degradation. Main components were 



$\bullet$	Introduction of permanent agriculture with improved fruit tree cultivation 



$\bullet$	Instalment of a tree outgrower programme for the production of power poles by farmers



$\bullet$	Establishment of improved kilns for charcoal production



$\bullet$	Launching of a cane rat (Thryonymus swinderianus) rearing system for meat production.







An ex"=post evaluation after termination of the PPP-cooperation assessed success and failure of the activities for the benefit of future activities.







Results



The cultivation of genetically improved oil palms, mango and orange trees in the buffer zone of high value teak plantations turned out to have a high stimulus for rural dwellers mainly due to increased household income. 



Introduced brick kilns with high carbonisation productivity contributed to additional income through the sale of charcoal and covered the energy demand of the households in selected villages. An interest in fuelwood plantations was raised.



The planting of teak trees on farmland for the timber company gained much interest among farmers and led to self"=organising activities among them. Revenues from timber sale are supposed 10 to 12 years after planting.



Despite extensive training measures the cane rat breeding system was not adopted by the target groups. After 3 years most animals died due to negligence. 



The introduction of the abovementioned activities resulted in the prevention of wildfires in the project area, thus achieving the overall objective of the PPP-cooperation.
