\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Deforestation and forest degradation are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) as a likely component of a global post-Kyoto regime, i.e. after 2012, implies operational and cost efficient monitoring methodologies for providing reliable estimates of the respective forest biomass and carbon pools. Presently, methodologies to observe biomass and carbon stock changes in the world's forest are studied.

The poster shows how constraints regarding monitoring forest degradation in remote sensing can be solved by the use of integrated inventory systems. These combine the capacities of remote sensing techniques to assess spatial data on forest areas with the potential of sample based field surveys. However, the quality of such remote sensing data depends on its spatial, spectral, radiometric and temporal resolutions, especially if passive sensors, working only with reflected sun"=light, are used. Especially in the tropics the dependence on sun"=light and on cloud free sky are to be seen as a big disadvantage. But then new generation active sensors, like e.g. the RADAR based TerraSAR-X satellite, could improve these shortcomings. The combination of quantitative terrestrial data on forest biomass with TerraSAR-X data was used to develop a method for detection and quantification of various drivers of forest degradation, like e.g. slash and burn or selective logging. These drivers are of great importance when dealing with the monitoring of forest resources in the tropics. Furthermore, the suitability of TerraSAR-X data for REDD-issues and additional applications in the tropics are described and discussed. The developed methodology could be used not only in the scope of REDD, but also in future forest monitoring assessments frameworks, like e.g. in FRA by FAO.
