\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

In the last 15 years, India has successfully embraced economic reforms, which has led to GDP growth of \mbox{9\,\%}. However, the continuing problem of persistent hunger, under nutrition and food insecurity seriously questions the relevance of this growth and demands urgent attention from policy makers so as to improve and save the lives of millions of people.

The food security and livelihood of more than \mbox{60\,\%} of India's population dependent on agriculture and its allied activities. Despite there being an increase in the quantity of

foodgrains being produced domestically as well as in the imports of foodgrains, India has

been unable to achieve food security for its own population. During the last one decade, despite having achieved national level (macro) food security and the boost in the overall GDP growth, agricultural production and rural income growths have slowed down. With little reduction in the number of undernourished and poor people, the country is far behind in achieving the Millennium Development Goals. There are several factors that influence food security viz. availability, access and Utilisation/Absorption. The present paper will focus on the availability of food and its relation to macro level agricultural production and productivity in India. It will analyse the current agricultural scenario in India with a detailed analysis of the various elements of food security, and bring out the factors that affect the food security and nutrition. The paper then describes the various policy, programmes and interventions to meet the challenges and constraints encountered and suggest for additional efforts needed in terms of policy and implementation for achieving food security and the Millennium Development Goals.
