This paper examines changes in land use intensity and its impact on household food security in Latin America, drawing upon a case study of frontier farmers in the Sierra del Lacandón National Park (SLNP), in the tropical lowlands of Petén, Guatemala.  This is an area where the agricultural frontier has expanded progressively into tropical rainforest.  



This paper makes use of a unique panel data set, collected among frontier settlers in eight subsistence agriculture communities. In 1998, 241 randomly selected household heads were interviewed on demographic, socio"=economic, political"=economic, and agricultural characteristics.  These households were then followed up on a second interview in 2009, and additional randomly selected households were chosen and interviewed to create a representative sample of the eight communities in 2009.  The 2009 survey is the largest of its kind completed in a frontier area of Central America, and such extensive panel data for this area is otherwise unknown.  In the intervening 11 years between interview periods the frontier has effectively become closed, as no freely available land exists for claiming, neither by newer arrivals nor by the off"=spring of earlier arrivals.  This leads to an increase in the population density of this conservation area.



This paper takes as its theoretical framework the multiphasic framework, as adapted from the purely demographic model and applied to land use/cover change research.  Specifically, it examines the rural households' responses to increasing population density, focusing on: redistribution of land, out"=migration, fertility reduction, and/or intensification of land use.  This paper furnishes models addressing one of these possible responses, namely land use intensification as characterised by the changes in the cultivation area of different crop types, the application of familial and hired labour, and the use of purchased inputs and the mechanisation of the land.  This response is chosen because of its implications for household food security. As the premise of the multiphasic theory posits that land use intensity is but one possible response (the others being out"=migration, fertility reduction, and/or the redistribution of land), those alternative responses are included in the models as independent variables.
