Agriculture is the second highest revenue earner after oil and has all the potential to boost the nation's economy despite its neglect.  More than 70 percent of her citizenry live on Agriculture and practise it with local and modern tools though not as sophisticated and refined as they are obtained in developed nations.  Even now, Agriculture is almost entirely left to the aged whose strength and capability is gradually diminishing with each passing day.



The two seasons, rainy and dry, that the country enjoys favour agricultural production but the aged and the few farmers left on the field are only confined to the rain"=fed agriculture.  This is because of the capital that irrigated agriculture entails not only scares the farmers but also discourages them as a result of poor economic returns that may accrue to them for their labour and commitments.



The World Food Summit (1996) defines food security as when all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to enough safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy lifestyle.



Food security is even a key to any nation's socio"=political stability and tackling hunger and poverty forms the first of the eight Millennium Development Goals set aside as targets for 2015 particularly for impoverished nations.



The abundance of land and water resources in Nigeria augurs well for irrigated agriculture; the available human, material and financial resources justify its practice.  The only thing that is probably lacking is the political will and interest.



There is hardly anywhere in Nigeria   where irrigated agriculture cannot be practised to sustain the multifarious types of crops grown in the respective locations or component states.   Therefore the main objectives of this paper are to:



i)  evaluate the climatic, soil, crop, land and water and socio"=economic potentials which Nigeria enjoys that can foster irrigated agriculture and 



ii) guarantee full participation in the World Food Day celebrated on the 16 October of every year.
