The study is employing a Stochastic Frontier Production (SFP) function approach to investigate the institution's role to enhance rice productivity in Pakistan's Punjab.  The data is collected from 200 farmers in the year of 2007 from two Tehsils of Sheikhupura district, which is one of the major basmati rice growing districts of Punjab province.  The data is divided into three farm size groups i.e., small, medium and large to identify the existence of maximum potential for basmati rice.  On one hand, the results of stochastic production function depict that over use of pesticide is adversely affecting the rice productivity and on the other hand, improper combination of input use reflects poor dissemination of extension services, which need to improve to enhance rice productivity.  It will help to protect the major natural resources (environment and quality of soil) for future generations.  The medium farmers are highly efficient followed by large and small farmers, indicating that highest potential exists for small farmers. The minimum level of technical efficiency is also lowest for small farmers, implying that small farmers are more vulnerable to natural risk.  This group also constitutes a major part of the rural population and therefore, different institute such as extension and donor agencies should focus this group for the rural development.  Average technical efficiency of the whole sample indicates that existing potential is not very high and therefore, research institutes should focus for the development of new high yielding varieties.  The results of inefficiency model suggest that investment on education could positively contribute to enhance rice productivity for small farmers.  The inefficiency model also recommend that credit supply should be tied up with the purchase of tractor (mechanisation) for small farm size group because it is significantly contributing to improve technical efficiency of this group, implying that the role of agricultural credit supply institutes (such as banks) needs to be redefined.}
