The study was conducted in Rayitu district of Bale zone, Southeast Ethiopia in 2006, to assess the pastoral woody vegetation utilisation practice, to describe the woody vegetation structure and to assess the relationship between woody density, range condition paramters. A single visit survey was conducted to assess pastoral perceptions towards woody vegetation utilisation practice, using structured questionnaires (90 household), and group discussions. To assess the woody vegetation, the district was stratified into two altitude (765 to \mbox{1070\,m} and 1070 to \mbox{1350\,m a.s.l.}) zone. Each altitude was further stratified in to three different grazing types (Communal, Enclosure and Benchmak grazing sites). Data on woody vegetation parameters were gathered from a total of 72 sample sites of 50\,m\,x\,4\,m belt transect. The most dominant use of woody plants is for construction (\mbox{91.1\,\%}) followed by browse (\mbox{67.8\,\%}) and medicinal values (\mbox{84.4\,\%}). About \mbox{80\,\%} of the respondents replied the woody vegetation cover has declined. Over \mbox{86\,\%} of the respondents replied that compared to past, their grazing lands are now covered with bushes and shrubs. A total of 45 different species of woody plants were identified in the district. Among the woody species highly desirable, intermediate and less desirable species accounted for 22.22, 42.86 and \mbox{37.14\,\%}, respectively. \textit{Acacia} (\mbox{17.78\,\%}), \textit{Commiphora} (\mbox{11.11\,\%}) and \textit{Grewia} (\mbox{15.56\,\%}) were the dominant woody vegetation. The mean density of woody species (plants/ha) was 2\,654 (communal), 2\,668(enclosure) and 2\,042 (benchmark). Correlation analysis showed that woody species density was negatively correlated with range condition parameters, total range condition score, total DM biomass and positively related with bare ground cover in communal and enclosure grazing site. Therefore, control of bush encroachment thought selective thinning of unwanted woody plants is crucial. Furthermore, conservation and management of desirable tree and shrubs for sustainable use is recommended. }
