Baobab is a multipurpose fruit tree with a wide geographical distribution in arid and semi"=arid areas of tropical Africa. The tree species is important to local communities' livelihood as a source of food, medicine and fibres. Various baobab products are sold in informal and urban markets across Africa and are a substantial source of income, especially during the dry season. Recently, derivates of the fruit, such as baobab fruit pulp and seed oil are commercialised and exported outside Africa, mainly Europe, Canada and USA. Pressure on baobab its resources is growing. Rural development, increasing population pressure, infrequent domestic use of baobab fruit and leaves, expansion of fruit for commercial use, lack of seedling protection (e.g. digging up seedlings to eat taproot), livestock browsing and trampling, land use intensification, fire and drought (due to climate change) are possible threats that may negatively affect the long"=term viability of baobab populations. In Mali, our study site, baobab products are used on a regular basis and valued in a cultural context, like in many other parts of West Africa. For the local society, the sustained viability of the baobab populations is therefore essential. For this, we try to encourage a `culture' to enhance regeneration by introducing plus trees into agroforestry systems spread throughout Mali. Therefore, the overall objective of this project is addressed to the selection of improved plant material.
