The effect of inclusion of different levels of diatomaceous earth (DE) (fossil shell flour) on growth and haematological variables of broiler birds was investigated. The experiment comprised 150 day"=old Arbor Acre strain of broiler chicks which were randomly alloted to five dietary treatments  which lasted for 8 weeks.  The control (T1) birds were fed normal diet while the other diets had different levels of  inclusion of DE \mbox{2\,\%} (T2), \mbox{3\,\%} (T3), \mbox{4\,\%} (T4) and \mbox{5\,\%} (T5). Each diet was replicated 3 times with 10 birds per replicate in a completely randomised design. There were no significant ($p > 0.05$) differences in the average feed intake, average weight gain and feed conversion ratio of all the birds on the different dietary treatments with values ranging from 1.04 to \unitfrac[1.26]{kg}{bird}, 0.44 to \unitfrac[0.61]{kg}{bird} and 2.04  to 2.33 respectively. The result of the haematological parameters of the birds revealed that the inclusion of DE significantly ($p < 0.05$) resulted in the highest levels of white blood cells (15.44 mg/100ml) for birds fed \mbox{2\,\%} inclusion while the least (10.09 mg/100ml) was observed in birds fed \mbox{5\,\%}. The total protein, globulin and red blood cell contents increased significantly as the DE inclusion increases. The glucose value also increase significantly ($p < 0.05$) as the level of DE increases from \mbox{2\,\%} (123.00 mg/100ml) to \mbox{5\,\%} (152.75 mg/100ml). However, albumin, packed cell volume and haemoglobin count were not significantly ($p > 0.05$) affected.



Haematological indices suggest that the health status of the birds were not adversely affected by the various inclusion levels of DE. Hence DE could still replace maize in broiler diets up to \mbox{5\,\%} level; however efforts towards reducing the dustiness of DE could promotes more of its benefits.
