\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

The study was conducted in lowlands of Bale, Ethiopia, in 2006, with the objectives of assessing the traditional rangeland utilisation practices, and determining the condition of the rangelands. Traditional pastoralists rangeland utilisation practices were assesses using structured questionnaires and group discussions. To evaluate the range condition an approach that integrated grass, soil and woody layers parameters were gathered. The condition of the rangeland was studied by stratifying the district into two altitude zone (765 to \mbox{1070\,m} and 1070 to \mbox{1350\,m a.s.l.}) and each altitude zone further stratified into three grazing types (communal, enclosures and benchmark grazing sites). About \mbox{91\,\%} of the pastoralists indicated that the condition of their rangelands was poor and the main problems were drought, overgrazing and bush encroachment. Over \mbox{86\,\%} of the respondents replied that compared to past, their grazing lands are now covered with bushes and shrubs. A total of 44, 2, 2, 8 and 45 species of grasses, legumes, sedges other herbaceous and woody plant were identified. Annual and less desirable grass species were dominated in communal grazing sites while perennial and highly desirable grass species were dominated in the benchmark site. The mean woody density in communal, enclosure and benchmark sites of the study district were 2,651.05, 2,667.2 and 2,041.7 plants per hectare, respectively. Thus, communal and enclosure grazing sites were bush encroached. Mean total range condition score in the communal, enclosure and benchmark grazing sites of the study district were 23.40 +1.35, 39 + 1.35 and 50.42 +0.9, and classified as poor, fair and good condition, respectively. Both the household and the field vegetation studies confirmed that the condition of the communal grazing land has deteriorated and a need improvement and rehabilitation. The enclosure sites of the study district were in transitional state from poor to fair condition, which also needs further improvement intervention while the benchmark sites need maintenance of their present condition.}
