Realizing the complex nature and interdependence of livestock health with palatable fodder availability, it was imperative to carry out hybrid development studies by selecting the most promising parents under water stress conditions. Field experiments were conducted to estimate the combining ability variations for forage quality components in sorghum"=sudangrass hybrids by using ten lines of sorghum as female parents (lines) and five of sudangrass as male parents (testers) under normal and water stress conditions. The data were recorded on sugar contents, leaf to stem ratio, crude protein, crude fibre, nitrogen free extracts, ether extract and total ash. Accession 8614 and Line 7 were the best general combiners among the male parents, accession 80364 and 80114 were the best female parents under normal as well as water stress conditions. The parental lines having high GCA estimates were due to their genetic make up indicate the presence of favourable genes with additive gene effects. Pedigree selection would be effective for breeding of forage quality. The results of the studies have indicated the availability of drought tolerant genetic material in sorghum and sudangrass. This is a step forward in identifying the parents and hybrid combinations between these closely related species which are relatively high yielding as well as more palatable for the livestock in comparison to the species alone. The similar parental behaviour under both conditions indicates the consistency of genetic inheritance was not influenced by any environmental factor. As per major theme of the study, availability of such material is a step forward in working on sorghum"=sudangrass hybrid development with special reference to the water stress conditions. }
