Growing concerns about the downturn of productivity growth and environmental problems associated with intensive paddy systems call for innovative practices in rice cultivation. Improved technologies have to increase productivity by simultaneously addressing land, labour, and capital constraints. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI), which was introduced in the mid 1980s as a low external"=input technology, promises to increase productivity in a sustainable way and at affordable costs for resource"=poor producers. Nevertheless, SRI adoption is still limited, and there are knowledge gaps as to what determines adoption by smallholders under different agroecological and socioeconomic conditions. This study provides empirical evidence by analysing SRI adoption in the small farm sector of Timor Leste.



Using cross"=sectional household and plot level data from 400 rice producers collected in late 2009, we apply regression analysis on adoption status and adoption intensity to better understand factors that influence household decisions. Thus, the research helps to identify potentials and constraints related to the dissemination of knowledge"=intensive cultivation systems in smallholder farming communities. 



Initial descriptive analysis indicates a great variability in terms of input intensity and yield across different coexisting rice cultivation systems, including SRI, conventional, and hybrid rice systems. Preliminary results suggest that SRI yields of 3.4 t.ha$^{-1}$ exceed the outcomes of alternative systems significantly by 0.5 t.ha$^{-1}$ on average. Notwithstanding outcomes of SRI adoption seem to be profitable, farmers face difficulties to adopt the technology as a whole and keep applying previous techniques simultaneously. Different limited dependent variable models will be used to analyse adoption determinants, with a special focus on the role of farm (land size, soil conditions etc.), household (labour availability, financial endowment etc.), and contextual (access to markets and extension services etc.) variables.
