The most common wild Pistacio species in Iran are Pistacia atlantica and Pistacia khinjuk. They have been used as rootstocks for Pistacia vera by top"=working for many years. Pistacia atlantica is a dioecious species and one of the important forest trees in dry areas of Iran which is playing an important role due to its particular characteristics, in aforestation of the dry areas. Studies of pistachio ecology in natural stands are relatively rare. Even in natural Zagros forests in Iran where wild pistachio is present, studies have focused on wholestand structure or management practices associated with the oak component, information specific to the pistachio component is generally lacking. To study the leaf anatomy variability among populations and genders of Pistacia atlantica var.kurdica, three wild populations in north"=west of Iran were selected. Populations are placed in two provinces, one of them is in Kordestan Province and the other are in Western Azarbayejan province. The aim of the study was to survey the variation of leaf anatomy in different regions. In each population, 30 trees (10 males and 20 females), were randomly selected. This study addresses the anatomical aspect of the leaves. These characteristics were measured on five fully expanded leaflets of different leaves. ANOVA as well as mean comparison of the traits revealed a significant diversity among the populations and did not show any significant differences between male and female trees for the investigated traits. In addition, correlation among characteristics was investigated.Finally the anatomical variability exhibited by the Iranian populations of Pistacia atlantica var.kurdica may be interpreted as relevant to the ecological plasticity and the physiological mechanisms.}
