\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Zambia, despite being endowed with rich natural resources, ranks 166 out of 177 countries on the Human Development Index. Despite strong economic performance in recent years, poverty has not abated and remains a major issue. According to the Central Statistical Office's 2006 estimates, 64 percent of the Zambian population, or approximately 7.5 million people, live below the national poverty line (CSO, 2006). Moreover, 46 per cent of the population lives in extreme poverty (UNDP, 2006).

Poverty in Zambia is predominantly a rural phenomenon, affecting 81 percent of rural population. The country has recorded positive GDP growth for the last nine consecutive years, led in particular by the mining, construction and services sector, while growth in the agricultural sector has remained stagnant. This phenomenon has been generally explained by the fact that most farmers in Zambia are smallholders who focus on low value rainfed commodities using low efficiency technologies.

A wide number of additional elements concur in explaining the unsatisfactory performances of the agricultural sector and the persistence of rural poverty. This study aims at analysing how the access to efficient technology allows for improvement in agricultural yield, and how this in turns leads to poverty reduction. In particular, the relation between agricultural yields, access to inputs and re"=investment behaviours are analysed at district level using a multivariate regression analysis.

The study is based on the data collected through the Living Conditions Monitoring Survey (LCMS) conducted bi"=annually by the Zambian Central Statistical Office. The survey has a nationwide coverage for all 72 Zambian Districts.
