To meet the top down food security policy, the knowledge regarding diversity of culture and nature of the local people in general is important. It is expected that the indigenous knowledge of local people is considered as one of the potential factors to promote food security. As a part of holistic approach from farm to fork it is important to look more deeply how people are managing their environment and farm in reaching adequate production to achieve food security.







The research is located in Nagari Aia batumbuak, West Sumatera Indonesia, a typical hilly area society. The primary data was collected from June until September 2009. Data were collected by using PRA (participatory rural appraisal) method. Data was analysed by MAXQDA and f4.







The result in the above mentioned field of plant protection show there are two categories of terminology for pesticides/insecticides; racun (toxic) and ubek (medicament). The word racun is most commonly used in this area to indicate pesticides and insecticides. That means that these farmers really know the hazardous of using it. Nevertheless they are still using it because the difficulties to manage the field and efficiency to reduce pest in time and cost. The belief that the location of the land will influence the ``degree'' respectively amount of racun been used. The closer the land to the hills, a higher degree of ``biodiversity'' (herb, pest) can be found which mean for the farmers high quantity and combinations of racun are needed. But, even though low ``biodiversity'' is in the down part of the region racun is highly needed due to insect and pest immunity, a consequence of intensive chemical practice in the last two decades. Farmer beliefs are that aside from the intensive cultivation, the climate change is also a main factor. The belief that if the climate would be stable like before (summer and rainy season balanced in every year) there is no need for pesticides and insecticides. The high levels in ``biodiversity'' and unpredictable rain fall make the farmers think they are not able to avoid using pesticides to manage their land to ensure food production.
