Widespread introduction of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) to the food, medicinal and animal feed market has been challenged during last years.  In many cases, these products have higher yields and contribute to reduce hunger and improve global food security. In other hand, however, there are concerns about their possible consequences on human and environmental health. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop a legal system for utilisation of GM foods worldwide. One of the main challenges of Iran which is located in a semi"=arid climate is reaching food security for its population of 75,000,000 and GM foods would be a choice for agricultural sector. Although Iran is not yet a producer of GM foods, but it is believed that the country will join to its market soon. While the first legislations of GM foods back to 1990s, the only legal framework for these products in Iran is National biosafety law which passed on 2009. The civil liability for the operators of GMOs has been discussed in the article 7 of this law. Reviewing this law reveals that the law is not efficient to deal with problems caused by consumption of GM foods by consumers. For example, in order to prevent any unwanted economic loss to consumers as well as producers and operators of GM foods, the responsibility insurance system has been developed in legal systems of many countries, whereas there is no such an insurance comment in the national biosafety law. It seems that such deficiencies in this law will slow the introduction of GM foods in the country which may be a potential obstacle for food security of the country in the forthcoming years.    }
