\textbf{Abstract}

Water extreme  events -drought- have been a major concern since the dawn of human civilisation. Droughts are recurrent and natural phenomena in Iran. The main objective of this study is to examine the common means by which residents of a drought"=affected area of Iran cope with this hazard and compare the coping strategies especially between poor and rich farmers. In other words, we seek to examine if there are different coping mechanisms to reduce drought losses between these two groups and if different level of access to livelihood assets make diverse coping strategies. These aspects are relatively novel that was fallowed by our study. In contrast to most previous studies which determined the farmer's coping strategies by using quantitative methods, a qualitative method (case study) for capturing emic perspective and multiple realities of farmers was designed. Data collected during the winter of 2010 from drought"=affected farmers located in southern area of Iran. We looked at the ex ante, In"=season and Ex- farmer's coping strategies for drought management and observed that the disparity in income and asset distribution between farmers is an important factor for choosing coping strategies. The study reveals that the lower income and access to productive natural assets farmers are, the more they are at risk and vulnerable levels. Regarding the identification of coping mechanisms to deal with drought, we found that what determines the coping mechanisms are the national government relief affair, loans and grants for hazard victims. While both poor and rich farmers were affected by the same drought, farmers belonging to poor group which suffered the most, receiving the least support from the government aids and these supports are more suitable for rich farmers. Finally, we recommended that extension services must prepared farmers for this hazard, because droughts are recurrent phenomena in Iran .Moreover governmental supports must be distributed purposefully between farmers and also government should offer special aids box for poor farmers, specifically}
