In 2007, the Food Crisis started and did hit hard the world in 2008. Increased commodity and input prices resulted in high food prices, causing changes in consumption and agricultural production in many countries worldwide. These drastic changes in relative prices had not only affected the consumers but also the farmers in developing countries, and posed a threat to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals related to poverty and hunger.







In Peru, most of the poorest farmers are potato producers in the Highlands and the impacts of the Food Crisis on these small"=scale farmers will certainly be very different than those of medium and large potato farmers from the Coast. Results using household's interviews from 51 potato farmers, 37 farmers in Huancayo (Mantaro valley) and 14 farmers in the Cañete valley, show that the short"=run impacts of higher input and food prices on poverty differ from them of hunger. Poverty increases are much frequent in the Highlands than in the Coast and hunger is in both regions not a problem. All interviewed farmers have perceived high fertiliser and food prices. Farmers in Huancayo have mostly perceived increasing prices for rice, sugar and oil. But they just increased their traditional consumption of native and processed potato varieties and reduced sugar consumption.







Fertiliser prices have hit potatoes farmers in Huancayo at worst, since potato is a major crop, the production depends much on fertiliser and the selling price for potato has only increase a little. For farmers in Cañete the situation is different, they have more capital and other crops for managing the crisis. It is remarkable that in Cañete all farmers purchase their Guano (animal manure) and as the prices for mineral fertiliser increased they noticed increasing prices for Guano. In Huancayo, farmers also tried to gather more Guano since they purchased less fertiliser. This shows that Guano is a good substitute for mineral fertiliser and the best potato farmer's reaction for reduced purchase of mineral fertiliser.  



The increase in fertiliser, Guano and food prices appear likely to raise overall poverty of potato farmers in the Highlands of Peru substantially.
