Nepal's farm animal genetic resources (FAnGR) are the reflection of its unique geographic position, altitude and climatic variations, cultural and religious norms and values.Twenty"=five indigenous breeds of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goat, pig, horses and poultry are recognised in Nepal. Cattle and buffalo are the most important breeds of livestock that contribute more than \mbox{75\,\%} share of livestock sector to the agricultural GDP but more than \mbox{75\,\%} of the total population is still indigenous or non"=descript. Some of the very important local breeds, e.g., Lime buffalo which has a very high potentiality of milk production; Lulu cattle which is one of the smallest breeds of hairy cattle in the world that can be raised up to 4000 metre from average sea level; nine"=palm height cattle which is one of the smallest breed of hill cattle are on the verge of extinction. These breeds which can survive in a very harsh climatic condition have great roles in achieving food and nutritional security in Nepal. Though the signatories of the Convention on Biodiversity are obliged to implement the incentive principles into practice, disincentives for the farmers and livestock keepers to keep indigenous breeds of livestock still predominate in Nepal.



A study on conservation and utilisation of indigenous breeds was conducted during January- February, 2010 in Far"=western Region of Nepal. Almost all farmers under the study opined that indigenous breeds were the symbols of the region. These breeds are not only the main sources of animal protein but also have great potentialities in achieving the millennium development goals (MDG). Unfortunately, the number of these breeds is dramatically decreasing day by day. The depletion in their number can be mitigated if direct and indirect incentives are provided to the farmers. A few research works on some of these breeds was carried out in collaboration with Georg-August-University of Germany and Daimler---Benz Foundation. Further works on these native breeds have been strongly needed to know their potentialities for the food and nutritional securities of the people of these regions. European Union and other potential sponsors are cordially requested to contribute on these regards.
